2017-02-04 Learn and Network Meeting
The Arab American Association of Engineers, Architects and Computer Science (AAAEA)-Capital Area kicked-off the New Year by a Learn and Network (L&N) event on Feb 4, 2017, which included a technical presentation on Biomedical Engineering given by Mr. Mamdouh Elsakka*.
The presentation provided an insight on Biomedical engineering as a relatively new engineering discipline and highlighted how general engineering principals and fundamentals are applicable to the design and development of medical devices. Multiple commercially available devices were presented throughout the session covering a wide spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
It also illustrated the steps and procedures followed throughout the development cycle of medical devices from conception through commercialization which also captured issues related to product design, compliance with regulations, use of standards, and program management principals.
The presentation also demonstrated how biomedical engineers bridged the gap between engineering and medicine which resulted in the development of multiple innovative technologies that helped improved the quality of life of millions of patients worldwide.
* Mr. Elsakka is Senior Director of Research & Development at ACell, Inc. with over 25 years of experience in the medical device industry. Mr. Elsakka is a co-inventor in 5 patents and patent applications published in the United States and multiple foreign countries.
